Thailand Shelf Sellers: Starting a Content Operation on TikTok Shop

October 28, 2026
TikTok Shop passed Shopee in Thai GMV share in Q2 2026, but the two platforms lead in different categories. Test whether your category holds up in fifteen.

If you sell electronics or home goods, where your Thai volume comes from search on Shopee and your TikTok Shop listing has been the secondary channel, the change that hurt this year was not in your product or in your pricing. It was in where your traffic comes from. For most of the last five years the sensible Thai setup was a Shopee store doing the volume and a TikTok Shop listing catching whatever spilled over. That arrangement stopped being sensible in the second quarter of this year, when TikTok Shop took 48% of the three platforms' physical-goods GMV in Thailand against Shopee's 45% — the first time Shopee has been passed in a single quarter. Over the first half, TikTok Shop's Thai GMV reached roughly $9.9bn, up 116% year on year, while Shopee did about $9.8bn, up 32%. A year earlier the split was Shopee 56% and TikTok Shop 30%. This is not a story about Shopee collapsing; it grew 32%. It is a story about the increment going to whichever side is running content, and about what a seller whose whole operation was built for search is supposed to do with that.

Price the waste before you add a single new asset. Suppose you produce forty pieces of creative a month at a blended ฿750 each, which is ฿30,000 a month. Now look at what those assets are actually built to do. On Shopee Thailand in the first half, electronics was 29% of GMV, apparel 24% and health 8% — a shopper arriving to compare specifications. On TikTok Shop Thailand over the same period, beauty and personal care was 29%, apparel 23% and health 10%, and electronics does not appear in the top three at all. If your catalogue is mostly electronics, then most of those forty pieces are produced in a format built to show a change happening and placed into a feed that does not rank your category highly, while the shelf where your category actually leads receives the same asset a second time. You are not short of content. You are producing one asset for two surfaces that reward opposite things. The ฿30,000 is not the loss. The loss is the roughly ฿18,000 of it that lands on the wrong surface every month, while the platform where your category leads is the one giving up share.

The share flip is real, but it is a category story, not a platform story

The number that matters is not 48%. It is which categories make up that 48%. TikTok Shop Thailand's first-half mix was beauty and personal care at 29%, apparel at 23% and health at 10%; Shopee's was electronics at 29%, apparel at 24% and health at 8%. Those are two different baskets of goods bought by two different kinds of shopper, and the reason is mechanical rather than cultural. Electronics sells on specification comparison, which a search box handles better than a fifteen-second clip. Beauty sells on watching something happen to a face, which the clip handles far better than a specification table. Apparel and health appear in both top threes because both work either way — you can compare a shirt by fabric weight or you can watch someone put it on. So the question for a shelf seller is not whether to move to content. It is which part of the catalogue can be sold by showing a change, and how much of your revenue that part represents.

Two more numbers are worth having because they set the ceiling on what content can do for you. TikTok Shop Thailand disclosed more than three million creators carrying product links as of March 2026, so supply is not the constraint — a brand can find creators. And the frequency data says the buying behaviour has already moved rather than being a promotional spike: TikTok Shop users in Thailand placed about 11.8 orders a quarter against Shopee's 9.9, against roughly 5.2 a quarter in the first quarter of 2023. People are using it as a regular channel, not a sale-day channel. That is the strongest argument for building a real operation rather than a campaign: a regular channel rewards a steady rhythm, and a campaign does not produce one. It also explains why the ThaiRisers cohort — around half of the fifty featured local brands — grew GMV five to ten times in their first six months. They were not running a promotion. They were feeding a channel.

Step 1 — Decide whether your category can hold up in fifteen seconds

Three questions settle it, and they can be answered in an afternoon without spending anything. First, can the value of the product be shown as a change inside fifteen seconds — a before and after, a transformation, a demonstration of it working? Second, does the product have a use process, or is the purchase decision made entirely on specifications the buyer already knows? Third, when people ask about it, do they ask how it performs or do they ask what the parameters are? If the honest answers are yes, no, and 'how it performs', the category belongs in content. If they are no, yes, and 'what are the parameters', it belongs on the shelf and you should spend your content budget on the part of the catalogue that answers the other way.

Write the split as a revenue percentage, not a SKU count. Twenty SKUs that answer the wrong way but carry 70% of your revenue are a bigger strategic problem than two hundred that answer the wrong way and carry 8% of it. Most electronics-led sellers who run this exercise find a slice — accessories, small appliances with a visible effect, anything with an unboxing moment — that answers yes and is worth more than they assumed. That slice is where the first batch of creators goes, and it is deliberately not the whole catalogue.

The four-week plan in step three works better on paper than in your head. register with DAMI and ask the team for the content cold-start planner and get the content cold-start planner we use — a week-by-week publishing rhythm, the weekly review questions, and the three numbers that tell you whether to scale or stop.

Step 2 — Pick the first creators by posting cadence, not by follower tier

Do not start with the biggest creators you can afford. Start with the ones who post, because the constraint in a cold start is output, not reach. Open a candidate's profile and check three things: how many product-carrying videos they published in the last fourteen days, how concentrated those videos are in your category, and whether the comment section contains questions about the product rather than only praise. A creator with 40,000 followers who has posted eleven shopping videos in two weeks in your category is a far better first batch than one with 400,000 followers who posted twice last month across six categories. You are buying a publishing rhythm, and rhythm is visible on the profile before you spend anything.

Set the first batch at eight to twelve creators, not three. A cold start needs enough parallel output to tell you something within four weeks, and three creators produce too few data points to distinguish a bad creator from a bad brief. Expect roughly half to actually post. Then hold the batch steady for the full four weeks rather than swapping people in and out — a cohort you changed halfway through cannot tell you whether the rhythm or the people were the problem.

Step 3 — Set a publishing rhythm and give the cold start four weeks

Publish on a fixed rhythm rather than in bursts. A workable cold start for a shelf seller moving into content is four to six pieces of creator content a week for four weeks, held flat, with the same brief and the same product set throughout. The reason for flat rather than ramping is that a ramp confounds your own reading: if output rises and results rise together you cannot tell which caused the other. Review weekly on three numbers only — watch completion rate, product-card click rate, and orders attributed to content. Do not review on GMV in week one, because GMV in week one mostly measures whether samples arrived on time.

Give the four weeks a real decision at the end of it. If content-attributed orders are rising week over week by week three, scale the batch and widen the product set. If they are flat, the problem is almost always one of two things: the brief is too vague for a creator to shoot against, or the product set picked in step one does not actually show a change. Fix one, run another four weeks, and resist the urge to change both at once — you will learn nothing and you will have spent eight weeks doing it.

Step 4 — Take your first list from Thai stores that already made the switch

Thai stores that have already made this move are the best source of names you will find, because they have solved the exact problem you have. Pick three to five Thai-registered stores in your category whose TikTok Shop volume has grown visibly over the last six months, open their product pages, and list every creator who has posted about them in the last thirty days. Each of those creators has already cleared three hurdles: they shoot for your category, they accept a store like yours, and their content is currently being distributed. Then check each name against the cadence test from step two before you add them to the batch.

Two cautions keep this honest. Do not lift the competitor's brief — you will get the competitor's video, and the whole point of the exercise is that your product shows a change the viewer has not seen. And do not assume a creator who works for a Thai brand will work for a cross-border one at the same rate; ask early whether they take samples from overseas sellers, because a no at week three costs you the slot you needed. Sorting that out before outreach is faster than discovering it after.

How DAMI finds the creators already carrying your competitors' content

DAMI brings an 8-million-plus creator database, competitor and competitor-store creator search, automated outreach tasks, AI-assisted outreach, AI video creation, sample management, campaign management, social media management, store analytics, and multi-store team dashboards into one place. Three DAMI functions map onto the three places this usually breaks:

Build the first list from competitor stores

Open competitor-store creator search, pick three Thai stores in your category and pull every creator who posted about them in the last thirty days. You get names, contact routes, category history and posting frequency in one list, so step four is a search rather than a scroll.

Keep the brief and the sample with the creator

Attach the same brief and sample terms to every creator in the batch, and let automated outreach handle the follow-up cadence. Because the brief lives with the creator record, the four-week review in step three can tell a vague brief apart from a weak creator instead of guessing.

Read the three numbers per SKU, weekly

Use store analytics to track watch completion, product-card click rate and content-attributed orders per SKU against the publishing date, so the weekly review is a chart you open rather than a report you assemble.

Frequently asked questions

Does the share flip mean I should move everything off Shopee?

No, and the regional numbers argue against it. Across Southeast Asia Shopee still holds roughly 55% against TikTok Shop's 39%, and Shopee Thailand grew 32% while losing share. The right move is two independently managed channels with two sets of creative, not one channel replacing the other.

Which categories should not try content at all?

Anything where the buying decision is made on parameters the shopper already knows and where there is no visible change to film — commodity cables, replacement parts, spec-driven components. Those belong on shelf, and spending content budget on them is the single most common way this transition fails.

How much should the first four weeks cost?

Budget for samples and shipping plus commission, and expect most of the cost to be samples rather than fees. Eight to twelve creators at a mid-tier commission on a modest product set usually lands well under a single month of paid search, which is the comparison that matters: you are not adding a cost, you are moving one.

Can I reuse the same video on both platforms?

You can, and it is the mistake the category data warns against. One asset for a feed that rewards a visible change and a shelf that rewards parameter comparison means the asset is optimised for neither. Split the creative before you split the budget.

Is all this worth doing in a spreadsheet first?

Yes. Twelve creators, four weeks and three numbers fit in a sheet, and running one cycle by hand is the cheapest way to find out whether your category belongs in content at all. It stops being the right tool when you are maintaining dozens of creators across several SKUs and re-checking posting cadence by hand every week, or when you need the same competitor-store pull repeated monthly. That is when it is worth paying for, and not before.

Conclusion

Distribution is the one input you cannot buy back at last year's price, and everything above is about getting it from somewhere the price did not move. DAMI brings an 8-million-plus creator database, competitor and competitor-store creator search, automated outreach tasks, AI-assisted outreach, AI video creation, sample management, campaign management, social media management, store analytics, and multi-store team dashboards into one place.

Open your catalogue and tag each SKU with one question only: can its value be shown as a change inside fifteen seconds? Count the revenue behind the yes column. That number is the size of the content opportunity you actually have, and it takes about twenty minutes to get.

Start with DAMI and start the next cycle from traffic you did not have to bid for.
