Philippines Creators: Video on TikTok, Link on Shopee

Commission clawbacks pushed Filipino creators to keep posting on TikTok while moving the buy link to Shopee or Lazada. Detect the drift...
Philippines Creators: Video on TikTok, Link on Shopee
DAMI Insights

If you sell on TikTok Shop Philippines where affiliate content drives most of your orders and you hold no direct contract with the creators posting about you, the change that hurt this year was not in your product or in your pricing. It was in where your traffic comes from. The pattern is easy to miss because nothing about the video changes. The creator still posts on TikTok, the format is the same, the product is the same, and the caption now points at a Shopee storefront instead of your TikTok product card. Some add a Lazada code in the pinned comment. What changed is underneath: commissions that had already posted started reversing weeks later when a buyer filed a return inside the window, with no itemised reason and no workable dispute path, and affiliate balances went negative. Sellers who notice this tend to notice it as affiliate GMV declining while views stay flat, and the instinct is to push the creator for more volume. That is the wrong reading. The creator has not stopped working — they have changed which platform pays them, and the fix sits on the settlement side rather than the content side.

Price what the half-exit costs per hundred clicks before deciding how hard to fight it. Say a creator video sends 600 clicks to your TikTok product card, converting at 3.1% — roughly 19 orders at ₱450 average order value, about ₱8,400 of GMV. Move those same 600 clicks to a link that leaves the app and the realistic conversion is not 3.1%: the buyer has to open another app or tab, find the same product again and re-decide. Sellers who have measured it generally land between a third and a half of the in-app rate, so call it 1.2% — about 7 orders and ₱3,150. You have lost roughly ₱5,250 of GMV per video, and the creator took that loss deliberately, because the smaller commission they keep on Shopee or Lazada, validated on a shorter cycle and visible line by line, is worth more to them than a larger one that can turn negative weeks later. Nobody here is behaving irrationally. That is what makes it structural rather than negotiable.

What actually moved: not loyalty, but settlement certainty

Two things are happening at once and they need different responses. The first is a settlement problem: commissions post, the return window stays open for weeks, any refund reverses the payout, and the dashboard shows a number rather than telling you which order reversed. Filing a dispute asks for evidence the creator cannot produce, because the seller fulfilled the order and the buyer received it — the creator was a link in the middle. The second is a routing decision the creator made in response, and it is not disloyalty. Lazada and Shopee affiliate programmes pay lower headline rates but lock commissions on a shorter validation cycle and let creators see line by line which orders cleared. Less per sale, far more certainty of keeping it. When you push a creator to move the link back without changing that certainty, you are asking them to re-accept the exact risk that moved them in the first place.

There is a detail that makes this more urgent than the GMV line suggests. The Bureau of Internal Revenue still expects affiliate commission income to be declared through the self-employed track — BIR Form 1701 or 1701A annually and 1701Q quarterly — regardless of what the dashboard shows the following month. A creator whose posted commission is later clawed back carries the record-keeping burden on money they no longer have. So the reversal does not only cost them cash; it costs them paperwork on cash that has already gone. Any argument you make about keeping the link on TikTok has to clear that hurdle, and the only thing that clears it is certainty about what they will actually be paid and when.

Step 1 — Detect whether your creator pool has drifted

Three signals tell you before the GMV line does. First, compare views against attributed affiliate orders per creator across the last thirty days: a creator whose views held while attributed orders halved has most likely moved the link, because the content is clearly still being distributed. Second, open the five most recent videos from each of your top ten creators and read the caption and the pinned comment rather than watching the footage — the change is in the text, not in the video. Third, search your brand and product names on Shopee and Lazada and see whether a store you do not operate is listing them with creator-style imagery. Sellers who run this check usually find the drift concentrated in a handful of mid-tier creators rather than spread evenly, which is good news: the fix is a targeted conversation, not a programme-wide renegotiation.

Run it monthly rather than once. The routing decision is reversible and creators do move back when the arithmetic changes, so a single snapshot tells you much less than a trend does. Keep the three signals on one sheet per creator and you will see who moved, when, and whether they came back after you changed something — which is also the only way to know whether your fix actually worked.

The conversation in step two goes very differently if you can show a creator their own numbers rather than ask them to trust yours. register with DAMI and get the settlement tracker template from the team and get the settlement tracker template we use for this — per-order commission, validation date and reversal status, in a format you can send straight to a creator.

Step 2 — Fix settlement visibility before you ask for anything

Two moves, in this order. First, shorten what you promise: if you can commit to confirming a creator's commission on a fixed date rather than 'whenever the platform clears it', put that in writing, because what moved them was not the rate but the horizon. Second, keep your own per-order record and share it. You hold the data the creator does not — which orders shipped, which were delivered, which are still inside the return window — and a monthly line-by-line statement from you costs one export and buys the one thing the platform dashboard does not provide. Be careful not to promise you will absorb reversals you cannot actually absorb. Promise visibility and a date, both of which you can keep, rather than a guarantee you cannot.

Sequence matters more than wording here. Approaching a creator about moving the link back before you have fixed visibility reads as asking them to take your word for it, and it tends to fail specifically with the creators you most want to keep — the steady mid-tier ones who clear reliable monthly volume, who are, not coincidentally, the group bleeding worst from reversals. Fix the visibility first, then make the ask, and the same conversation lands completely differently.

The reliable lever is exclusivity of the thing being sold, not exclusivity of the creator. Give the creator a variant that exists only in your TikTok Shop listing — a bundle, a size, a colourway, a pack count, or a version bundled with your own branded accessory — so that a link pointing anywhere else sells a different product. This works because it does not ask the creator to give up their Shopee or Lazada income. It gives them a second, distinct thing to sell on the platform where the video already lives. Set commission on that exclusive SKU high enough that the lower-risk platforms do not obviously win on the same unit, and leave the rest of the catalogue routed wherever they like.

Watch the failure mode. If the exclusive variant is just the same item repackaged at a higher price, buyers who follow the link off-platform will find the cheaper original and you will have taught them to leave. The exclusive SKU has to be genuinely unavailable elsewhere and worth its price on its own terms. Sellers who get this right usually find the creator keeps posting on TikTok for the exclusive variant and keeps their other links for everything else — which is a better outcome than the all-or-nothing version you were about to ask for.

Step 4 — Run creators as a multi-platform asset with two sets of books

Accept that the video and the transaction now sit on different platforms, and manage them as two assets instead of mourning one. Asset one is content: it is produced on TikTok, that is where the audience is, and its value does not depend on where the checkout happens. Asset two is the transaction, and it is genuinely split now, so measure the two separately and stop scoring creators only on attributed TikTok GMV. A creator whose TikTok GMV halved but whose Shopee and Lazada volume rose may be worth more to you than before, while a creator whose TikTok GMV fell with no offset anywhere is the one worth renegotiating with.

Build the scorecard per creator rather than per platform: content output per month, total attributed volume across every platform they route to, and reversal rate on each. It is one sheet and it changes which creators you fight to keep. The ones who disappeared entirely are usually not lost to a competitor — they are lost to a reversals problem you can actually see, provided you are tracking reversals rather than only gross commission.

How DAMI keeps the settlement record and the creator thread together

DAMI brings an 8-million-plus creator database, competitor and competitor-store creator search, automated outreach tasks, AI-assisted outreach, AI video creation, sample management, campaign management, social media management, store analytics, and multi-store team dashboards into one place. Two DAMI functions carry most of the work above, and a third keeps the record straight:

Keep one settlement thread per creator

Attach the per-order commission record, the validation date and the reversal status to the creator's own thread, so the monthly statement you send in step two is generated rather than assembled. Every message and every version of the brief stays with the creator it belongs to.

Reach out in batches without losing the personal line

Set an automated outreach task across your mid-tier list with the exclusive-variant offer from step three attached, and let AI-assisted outreach handle follow-up timing. Replies land in the same thread as the settlement record, so the person answering can see what the creator has already been paid.

Track where the content goes, not only where it sells

Use social media management to see which creators are still posting about you on TikTok regardless of where the link points, so step one's drift check runs continuously instead of once a month.

Frequently asked questions

Is the creator breaking a contract by moving the link?

Almost certainly not. Affiliate terms on every one of these platforms reserve the right to reverse commissions on returned, fraudulent or cancelled orders, and none of them generally obliges a creator to route exclusively through one marketplace. What changed is the volume of reversals and the silence around them, not the written terms. Treat this as a commercial problem to solve, not a breach to enforce.

Should I just match Shopee's commission to win them back?

You can, but it is the expensive answer and it is not the thing that moved them. They left because the money was uncertain, not because it was small. Matching the rate without fixing the visibility leaves the original reason intact and adds cost on top of it.

How long before I know whether the exclusive variant worked?

Give it two cycles, roughly eight weeks: two weeks to get the variant live and into creators' hands, four weeks of publishing, and two weeks for the return window to close so the reversal rate on that SKU is real rather than provisional. Reading it at week three mostly measures whether samples arrived.

What if the drift is across my whole creator list?

Then the problem is not individual relationships, it is your product's reversal rate. A catalogue that generates more reversals than the market average will lose creators on every platform eventually, and no amount of outreach fixes that. Fix the return causes first, then rebuild the list.

Can I manage this in a spreadsheet?

Yes for the first pass, and we would not pretend otherwise: ten creators, three signals and a monthly statement fit comfortably in a sheet. It stops working when you are maintaining per-order settlement records for more than about thirty creators, when the same creator appears on three platforms and you need one reversal rate per platform, or when more than one person on your team needs to pick up the conversation without asking what was already promised. That is where the tool pays for itself, no earlier.

Conclusion

Distribution is the one input you cannot buy back at last year's price, and everything above is about getting it from somewhere the price did not move. DAMI brings an 8-million-plus creator database, competitor and competitor-store creator search, automated outreach tasks, AI-assisted outreach, AI video creation, sample management, campaign management, social media management, store analytics, and multi-store team dashboards into one place.

Pull your last thirty days of affiliate data and list, per creator, views alongside attributed orders. Anyone whose views held while orders roughly halved has moved the link, and that list — usually three to five names — is who you talk to first. Fifteen minutes of work.

Start with DAMI and start the next cycle from traffic you did not have to bid for.
